As part of the planning conditions, planning number: 12/02025/FLLon, Perth and Kinross Council required an archaeological Trial Trench programme of work for the development of the site. NG Archaeology Services were commissioned by Caledonia Trust Ltd and the Trial Trenching programme began on the 3rd April 2018 and was completed on the 11th April 2018. The site itself had contained a mill dam and leet and close by in an adjacent field, a number of ‘Roman’ urns were found in the 1800s during quarrying for sand. Seven trenches were planned across the site, which included the existence of a mill pond and the location of the leet or lade which ran off the pond across the SE edge of the site. Further excavations of two keyhole trenches took place over the 6th and 7th of June 2018. These were located over the leets that were visible on the earlier maps and proved to be very productive in understanding the development of the mill from processing corn to sawing timber.
